Trout Stream & Habitat Improvement Projects

South Fork of the Snake River Projects

Because the South Fork of the Snake is part of the One Fly venue we have aggressively been involved in helping fund and start stream improvement projects there. Three flood years have taken a hard toll on the river with damage to spawning habitat and to feeder streams. Because of the importance of the South Fork fisheries to the region, the foundation has an obligation to help restore the fish stocks to pre-flood conditions. To this end, we have funded projects slated to help bring back the river. Our funds have generated numerous matching federal funds so that these expensive projects can go forward.

Rainey Creek Habitat and Stream Spawning Improvement

$32,000 Joint project with U.S. Forest Service, Idaho Game and Fish, and Trout Unlimited. An important stream project to bring back spawning to one of the major tributaries to the South Fork. Project will be completed this year and will have far reaching benefits for the immediate future.

Burns Creek Fish Weir Spawning Bed Rehabilitation

$40,000 Another joint project with U.S. Forest Service, Idaho Game and Fish and One Fly. This is a major project to stop erosion of Burns Creek, the top spawning stream of the South Fork from damaged irrigation ditches and to control fish movement in the irrigation system. This project will increase the upstream movement of the Snake River Cutthroat and limit rainbow intervention during spawning. The project started construction the summer of 2000, and is a major step in increasing the fish population on the South Fork of the Snake River.

BLM Boat Ramp Improvement Project

$6,000 Three years of high water had destroyed most of the structures at the Palisades boat launching area. Since it was a benefit both for the public, guides on the South Fork and the One Fly during the event we donated a cost sharing with the BLM for the new construction the Palisades boat ramp, public restrooms and other amenities. Without our help the government would have tabled the project.

More South Fork Projects

Pine Creek restoration project for 2001 will be considered for funding.

New access sites for the Snake River drainage.

New Jackson Hole Projects

A major project with the U.S. Forest Service on the Hoback River for $50,000.

Several spring creek restoration projects with more silt removal.

Children's Elk Refuge Fishing Pond. A complete dredging and redoing of the North Park pond in Jackson.

Silt Removal in Jackson Hole Spring Creeks

We will be funding several projects to remove silt from Wyoming Game and Fish slip traps to allow freer movement of spawning trout. This low cost, high results project created record spawining runs for the year 2000.

Buffalo River Immigration Study

$12,000. Funding to map spawning and immigrant fish. Project included video tapes of how trout negotiate around barriers and checked returning spawners and will help develop better ways to encourage more spawning in all our western rivers with natural and man-made barriers.

Henry's Fork and Snake River Access Project

$10,000. We joined with Henry's Fork Foundation and the Idaho Game and Fish to improve access points and boat launch areas at five different points on the Snake and Henry's Fork areas. All fly fishers will enjoy better access to one of America's greatest trout rivers just about an hours drive from Jackson Hole.

Thurman Creek Fish Eradication & Reintroduction

$5,000. A project to poison non-native species and reintroduce native cutthroat to a creek that feeds the Henry's Fork drainage.
